This quote from psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott refers to how utterly essential we are to our babies and the impossibility of a baby being a person outside the orbit of the mother’s care. He famously said "whenever one finds an infant one finds maternal care, and without maternal care there would be no infant."

A new baby has no sense of separateness, only the experience of sensations of distress, discomfort, fear or pain and relief when mum or dad comes. They hold, cuddle and understand how to sooth ... and deliver it. The baby takes from the experience that someone is there for me, someone will come, someone will understand and sooth me, delight in me... and make things better. 

The tiny overwhelmed human receives the message: I’m here. I’m with you. And you’re worth it.

The dream of ABaby&Someone is to provide every parent and every type of family with the skills and knowledge to raise children who are securely attached for life.

We share the core belief of attachment theory: that we are born hard-wired for love, connection and protection and when that’s compromised the effects can be pernicious and lifelong.

There is enormous evidence that babies who show what we call “organised secure” attachment at one year old are most likely to grow into children, adolescents and adults who are thoughtful, caring, emotionally literate and socially intelligent.

They are also far more likely to enjoy good health, successful work lives, happier and long lasting intimate relationships.

In other words ... the secure baby becomes a resilient and thriving adult.

What do we do?

We’d love everyone to have the knowledge and skills to be the best parent they can possibly be.

We run workshops, we do individual, couple and whole family coaching sessions and we have a blog and facebook site for discussion, information sharing and questions. ABaby&Someone will work with you to fit into your life.
