“out-of-control emotions can make smart people stupid.”

Daniel Goleman

One of the most important jobs we have as parents is to provide our kids with the skills to be emotionally intelligent. These abilities are not inherited, they’re learned. And the best people to do this from birth are not teachers, friends or other adults, but parents. Mum and dad … mum and mum … dad and dad.

We all start out as parents asking that one question: what’s the best way I can help my child to be happy, healthy and successful? The research is now telling us the answer to that is not money, genetics or good looks, but rather emotional intelligence or EQ. In fact the research clearly indicates that it’s a much better predictor of good outcomes than IQ or intelligence quotient!

Growing to healthy adulthood has never been so fraught, and parenting in today’s world we need to take all opportunities to coach our children in these vital skills.  These are things we know are protective against mental distress and vitally important in personal and vocational success. Skills like naming, understanding and managing difficult feelings, impulse control, tolerance for distress and delayed gratification, compassion and empathy. To have a high EQ requires knowing yourself, your own feelings and needs, and being able to compromise in real time in complex social situations.
